My image of Emma Woodhouse is that she is some sort of busy body who loves to dabble and play with other peoples lives and hopes and wishes. Can we really call her the heroine of the story? i dont think so. I tended to feel that the orphan Harriet deserves that title more..

The Plot

Emma woodhouse, handsome, clever and rich, has a pefect life. she has decide never to get married but to live as the mistress of Hartfield, her fathers house in the beautiful English countryside. When she starts match - making, trying to bring Harriet, the sweet shy obedient orphan and Mr Elton, the sentimental vicar together, she finds her imagination has led her into danger. At that point, Frank Churchill arrives in the village of Highbury. He is good looking, wealthy and lively, bringing new life to the dull village. But what is the mysterious love affair which has brought the talented Jane Fairfax back to the village? And how will Mr elton and his new wife, the unbearable augusta Hawkins, get their revenge on Emma??

Mr Knightley, the master of Donwell Abbey, watches Emma as she makes her mistakes and is gradually forced by life to understand herself better. But even he abandons her after a disastrous excursion to Box Hill. Her perfect life seems about to end in loneliness and disappointment.
